چکیده

Abstract Hazards in reservoirs and lakes arising from subaerial landslides causing impact waves (or ‘lake tsunamis’) are now well known, with several recent examples having been investigated detail. The potential scale of such hazards was not widely known at the time Vaiont dam project 1950s early 1960s, although a small wave triggered by landslide another new reservoir nearby Dolomites (northern Italy) drew possible hazard to attention project’s managers. disaster 1963 arose combination disparate seemingly unrelated factors circumstances that led an occurrence could have imagined time. ultimate cause very large moving rapidly into displacing water. resulting overtopped height around 175 m 2000 people were killed. This paper identifies examines all issues surrounding order identify causal factors, contributory (including aggravating factors) underlying factors. In doing so, it demonstrates cannot be attributed simply landslide. Underlying geological gave rise high speed landslide, which would occurred anyway some However, without account for presence reservoir, i.e. choice location management respect hazard, there no disaster. Indeed, avoided if emptied pending further ground investigations. Understanding this case provides many lessons future projects mountainous locations but also highlights ongoing perhaps under-appreciated risk similar events involving other water bodies including geologically formed behind natural dams.

Sustainable Management of Eutrophic Lakes and Reservoirs

Eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs is a major water quality problem that poses significant environmental, economic and social threats around the world. Monitoring and managing lakes and reservoirs to prevent or limit eutrophication, therefore, has significant value. The literature has been reviewed to study ecological engineering and management methods that have been and can be applied to i...

Physical Controls on Methane Ebullition from Reservoirs and Lakes

Understanding the nature and extent of methane production and flux in aquatic sediments has important geochemical, geotechnical, and global climate change implications. Quantifying these processes is difficult, because much of the methane flux in shallow sediments occurs via ebullition (bubbling). Direct observation of bubble formation is not possible, and bubbling is episodic and dependent upo...
